The warmer weather is back and whilst it may be a little on the unreliable side, there really is no better time to give your garden the makeover it deserves. That being said, we can’t deny that when money is tight the thought of splashing out on luxuries doesn’t seem all that appealing.
The good news is there’s so much that can be done without breaking the bank. To help you get started we’ve pulled together some makeover ideas that are easy on your purse strings whilst still making a huge impact.
A lick of paint can go a long way. Whether it’s your fence, garden furniture or old plant pots, a fresh coat in a bold or neutral shade can instantly lift the space and make everything feel new again.
Before heading to the shops, take a look around your home or shed. Old crates can become quirky planters; broken terracotta pots can be used for rustic herb gardens and unused furniture can be given a new lease of life with a bit of imagination.
Pick up some inexpensive solar lights and dot them around paths, flowerbeds or patios. Not only are they energy-efficient, but they also add a lovely glow to your garden in the evenings.
Buying fully grown plants can quickly add up. Instead, grow flowers, herbs and veg from seed - it’s far cheaper and surprisingly satisfying to watch them thrive under your care.
Break up your garden into sections using gravel, decking offcuts or even outdoor rugs. It’s an easy way to give structure to your space and create distinct areas for dining, relaxing or pottering about.
If space is tight, think up rather than out. Use trellises, hanging baskets or even a few shelves fixed to a wall or fence to show off trailing plants and colourful blooms.
Use old bricks, stepping stones or gravel to create a pathway. It’s a small change that adds character and function without needing a landscaper.
Encourage birds, bees and butterflies by planting pollinator-friendly flowers or making a bug hotel from old wood and garden scraps. It’s low-cost and adds life and movement to your space.
