Recently, we’ve seen the longer days and the return of sunshine as we begin to say goodbye to winter. The arrival of a new season is the perfect time to look ahead and get your greenhouse suitably ready for the months to come.
First up is a thorough clean, a more tedious task, but no less important. Your greenhouse creates warm and humid conditions, which is the perfect breeding ground for plants, pests, mould and algae.
To get right in there, start by removing all pots, trays and plant debris. Sweep out leaves and soil, followed by washing glass (inside and out) to maximise sunlight and support early growth. Finally, give any benches and shelving a much-needed scrub and clean gutters to prevent blockages before spring showers. Just like that, your greenhouse will be as good as new.
Winter weather can be harsh, causing subtle damage to your greenhouse that you’ve not even noticed. Doing a simple inspection and completing early repairs will help retain heat in spring and prevent structural problems in summer winds.
The main things to look out for are:
This one is particularly important for summer. On sunny days, your greenhouse can exceed temperatures of 40 degrees, posing a major risk. To check you’ve got the correct set-up and sufficient ventilation, be sure to test the roof and side vents. Check that automatic vent openers are functioning and give any fans a clean and test.
One final tip: consider adding shade paint or mesh for added protection during the summer months.
Your greenhouse is going to be busy during the upcoming growing seasons, so what better time to give it an internal refresh? Simple tasks such as replacing old compost and sterilising old pots and seed trays are a strong starting point. But don’t underestimate the power of planning and giving your crop layout some thought, for maximum airflow and sunlight.
With a few hours dedicated to your greenhouse, getting it prepped for the warmer months ahead, there’s no doubt you’ll see success during the new growing seasons.
