If you’ve been dreaming of growing your own veg but are concerned your garden space isn’t big enough, we have some good news for you.
To grow your own vegetables, you really don’t need much room; all that stands between you and stocking your fridge with homegrown goodness is containers and small pots. Here are six tips to get you started.
For your small space to thrive, you need to kick things off with a strong set-up. Our advice would be to decide where you’ll be growing your veg. For instance, containers are an ideal choice for smaller areas and can be placed anywhere with light. On the other hand, even a small raised bed can grow a significant amount of food if filled with quality compost.
This brings us to our next point: quality compost is essential. Cutting corners and choosing poor-quality compost will lead to weak growth and wasted effort. You’ll thank yourself for spending a little extra and investing in something of a higher quality, as it’ll reduce the need for feeding and support steady, healthy plant development.
If you’re working with a small space, you should select crops that are suited to the environment. This means avoiding large, slow-growing veg such as cauliflower or squash. Instead, focus on compact, fast-growing options like radishes, lettuce, carrots and salad leaves that will make better use of the space and provide quicker harvest.
Naturally, if your space is limited, using trellises, pots or supports to grow upwards is an effective solution. Another option, particularly for containers, is bush or trailing varieties (like cherry tomatoes) that can spill over the sides.
A really simple but important piece of advice is to make sure you’re keeping on top of your maintenance. In a smaller environment, you’ll notice a buildup much sooner, with pests known to hide in damp areas - completing regular checks will control this.
This seems obvious, but you don’t have space to grow it all, so choose the veg you love and will actually be eating.
Feeling inspired? We don’t blame you, there’s nothing like the feeling of growing your own veg. If you need a little helping hand to get moving, drop us a message, and we’ll get started.
