With spring fast approaching and the weather getting milder by the day, we’re viewing our outdoor spaces in a new light as a new year gets underway. Whether you have grand plans to undertake a major garden makeover or want to make a few tweaks to transform your outdoor space for the warmer seasons ahead, planting a tree unlocks many plus-points.

Read on to discover an essential guide to tree planting, and why winter is the perfect time to get to work.

Planting trees makes the world a better place

Tree planting, both in public and private spaces, has grown exponentially in recent years. The Woodland Trust alone has planted some 50 million trees since its foundation in 1972, and many more people have taken on their own tree planting missions across private spaces and local areas. As a result, Britain is looking a whole lot greener than it did 40 years ago!

Trees are vital for people, wildlife and the environment. They provide homes and food for thousands of species, and are playing huge roles in our battle against climate change.

Exposure to trees, whether that’s on a walk in your local woods or your own backyard, also enriches your health and wellbeing. Being in nature on a regular basis is great for our mental and physical health.

When to plant your own tree

The ideal time to plant a tree in your own garden is right now. During the winter months, trees are dormant and less likely to become damaged.

Tree planting season officially started in November and ends in March in Britain, but you may get away with planting a little earlier or later if you’re based in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Choosing the perfect specimen

Selecting a tree specimen that will thrive in your garden isn’t easy. There are countless trees and shrubs to choose from, but you should always go native. Varieties like Alder, Silver Birch, Blackthorn, Bird and Wild Cherry, Elder, Hazel, Holly, Rowan, and Goat Willow are all great options for British gardens, and local wildlife is certain to love them too.

Always buy your trees from reputable sellers, and avoid planting a large number of trees outside of tree planting season to keep your new foliage nice and healthy.

It’s time to get planting – here’s how!

When planting a new tree, it’s all about the prep. Make sure you store your tree upright in a place that’s protected from wind and frost once they arrive.

Prepare the area by marking out your planting site, ensuring your tree will have the space it needs to flourish. The space required will vary from species to species. Clear the site of weeds and overgrown foliage before pit planting your new addition.
